Over the years there have been a number of churches closely connected
with the Corps, particularly those within the barracks, St Andrews at
Eastney, St Michael and All Angels at Deal and the chapel of St Christopher
above the gateway at Stonehouse Barracks, Plymouth. The barracks at Eastney
and Deal have now closed and the Royal Marines no longer worship in their
churches. As the original Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment
of Foot was largely recruited from the Trained Bands of the City of London,
it was particularly appropriate that in 1974 the Corps should be granted
the privilege of being affiliated to St Lawrence Jewry next Guildhall,
the parish church of the Lord Mayor and Corporation of the City of London.
This was commemorated on St George's Day that year with a service and
due ceremony, after which 40 Commando exercised another privilege by marching
through the City with Drums Beating, Colours Flying and Bayonets Fixed,
when the Captain General, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and the Lord Mayor,
Sir Hugh Wontner, took the salute at the Mansion House.
