42 and 44 Commandos arrived in India early in 1944 and after jungle training,
they gained experience in fighting the Japanese when they relieved other
units in the Arakan. In January 1945 they fought important actions to
cut off the escape route of the retreating Japanese. They seized Akyab
and landed at Myebon which they also secured. In the decisive battle to
capture Kangaw, the fighting raged for 36 hours with attack and counter-attack.
'The Battle of Kangaw' is now a Memorable Date for both Commandos.
