Internal Changes

In 1962, for the first time since WW2, a major re-organisation look place within the Commandos. Three Rifle Companies, with Support and HQ Companies replaced the seven Troops - HQ, Support and five Rifle. These companies were lettered throughout the alphabet for easy identification; 40 Commando 'A', 'B' and 'C; '41 Commando 'E', 'F' and 'G'; 42 Commando 'K', 'L' and 'M'; 43 Commando '0', 'P' and 'Q'; 45 Commando 'X', 'Y' and 'Z'. One of the Corps' deficiencies had always been the lack of integral support. The first major development was the conversion of 29 Commando Light Regiment Royal Artillery in 1961. Also in 1968 the commando carriers were replaced by the Landing Platforms Dock (LPD) HMS Fearless and Intrepid, and 3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron was formed in Singapore by concentrating together the individual Commando Air Troops. In 1971 59 Field Squadron Royal Engineers, who had worked closely with 3 Commando Brigade, re-formed as 59 Independent Commando Squadron RE. The Commando Logistic Regiment Royal Marines, containing RN, RM, RAOC, RCT and REME personnel held its commissioning parade in 1972.
