Royal Marines guarded Napoleon on HMS Bellerophon as he was taken to exile on the remote island of St Helena, following his defeat at Waterloo 1815. Napoleon apparently inspected the Royal Marines under Captain Marshall and commented "Much might be done with a hundred thousand men such as these".
