In 1964 the Royal Marines celebrated the Tercentenary of the Formation
of the Admiral's Regiment in 1664. The occasion was observed by serving
and past members of the Corps all over the world. In London 41 Commando
provided the major portion of the Review unit, augmented by officers and
men from other- units, ships and the Royal Marine Forces Volunteer Reserve.
This unit, with in addition the Colours of Royal Marines Barracks Eastney
and those of 40 and 45 Commandos, was therefore representative of the
whole Corps. On 10th June, the birthday of the Captain General. HRH Prince
Philip took the salute on Horse Guards when the Massed Bands Beat Retreat.
On 22nd July, the Lord Mayor of London inspected the Review unit on the
Artillery Ground in the City, where the first recruits were enrolled in
1664. Afterwards the Lord Mayor and Corporation held a Reception for all
ranks in the Guildhall. On 23rd July, in the grounds of Buckingham Palace,
Her Majesty The Queen reviewed the unit, which paraded in blue uniform,
Lovat dress and combat dress, and with some of the weapons and equipment
in current use in the Corps. Also on parade was a contingent of the Royal
Marines Association. On completion of the parade, and before the march
past, Her Majesty was presented with a Corps brooch and His Royal Highness,
the Duke of Edinburgh, with a pair of cuff links. In the evening Her Majesty
dined with nearly 300 serving and retired officers in the Painted Hall
at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. It was on that occasion, at which
the Captain General took the Chair as President, that Her Majesty expressed
a wish that henceforth the Royal Marines should drink the Loyal Toast
seated in all their messes ashore and afloat. On 24th July the Captain
General read the lesson at a Service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul's Cathedral
at which the Bishop of London preached the sermon. The service was also
attended by the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs of the City of London. In
the evening His Royal Highness was present at the Royal Marines night
at the Royal Tournament and then went on to a Reunion for serving and
retired members of the Corps, which was held in the Lyceum Ballroom off
the Strand. On 30th July the Captain General attended a Senior NCOs Banquet
at the Guildhall, Portsmouth.
