Sir Compton Mackenzie

Sir Compton Mackenzie - writer. 1883 - 1972.
Oxford graduate, began on the stage, but turned to literature, publishing first novel in 1911. Served at Gallipoli in World War 1, and in 1917 became director of the Aegean Intelligence Service based in Syria. Novels include "Sinister Street" (1913/1914) "Whisky Galore" (1947). A strong supporter of Scottish Nationalism, he was knighted in 1951.
