Harry Corbett - actor. 1925 - 1982
Born in 1925 in Burma, son of an Army Officer. Called up in 1942, he served
in HMS Devonshire, Euryalus, and Duke of York, and had a spell ashore
in Sydney in the shore establishment HMS Golden Hind. "There were
times in the Royal Marines when I had to con myself to keep sane. I thought
the whole set up was absolutely wonderful. It was just that I was completely
miscast. For instance, I could march perfectly well with a rifle and all
that, but when a band started to play, it was all so idiotic I'd curl
up with laughter and this did not seem to be appreciated". Played
rag and bone man Harold Steptoe alongside Wilfred Brambell in "Steptoe
and Son" 1962 - 1974.
