Maj John Pitcairn 1722 - 1775
Served in the Seven Years' War, and by the time of the American War of
Independence, in which the Marines played a major role, he was a veteran,
and a much respected officer. Killed by one of the last shots fired at
the battle of Bunker Hill, he fell into the arms of his son, William,
a Lieutenant of Marines. Another of his 10 children, Robert was a Naval
officer, after whom Pitcairn Island is named
